Our Beliefs
The leadership of this church believes
that there must be unity in the clear areas of biblical teaching, but in matters of opinion, a wide variety of differences
can be tolerated – as long as these opinions do not contradict biblical teaching, are not made a test of fellowship
or church membership, or are not made essential to the church’s teaching.
Within that framework, we believe…
… in God the father, the Creator
of all things. He is eternal, loving, merciful and just.
… that the Old and New Testament
scriptures are the inspired Word of God. The Bible is the authority for our beliefs and teachings.
…that humanity was created in
the image of God, but fell into sin, and is, therefore, lost. Only through faith in Jesus Christ can salvation and spiritual
life be found.
…that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of the living God, and our Savior. He died on the cross, a sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures; He arose
bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven where He is seated at God’s right hand, making intercession for us.
…that the death, burial and
resurrection of Jesus provide the only basis for salvation for all who believe, and thus, become children of God. Those accepting
Christ by faith should repent of sin, confess their faith, and be baptized into Him.
…that the Holy Spirit is One
who participates in the process of conversion and who indwells, guides, instructs, and empowers the believer.
…that the Lord’s
Supper and Baptism are ordinances for the Church during this present age. We maintain that both should be observed as they
were in the days of the apostles. Therefore, we offer weekly communion, as well as practicing believer’s baptism by
immersion.
Capitol City Christian Church is an
independent Christian fellowship. We are part of what was historically called
the Restoration Movement. This movement sought to get rid of the divisions within
the churches that had spread across the country almost two centuries ago, and come to agreement on two very basic principles.
1.
The authority of the Bible.
2.
Unity.
These simple goals meant we would
accept what Scripture says and we would follow as closely as humanly possible the teachings and practices the New Testament
sets forth. Early on in the development of our churches, we realized not everyone
would agree about everything, so a motto was coined. “In essentials, unity. In non-essentials, liberty. In all things,
love.” The essentials are those things Scripture teaches are matters
of salvation and forgiveness of sin: grace, faith, repentance, baptism, and continuing
to follow Christ. Things that are not essential for salvation or personal agreement
include topics such as Millennial positions, the role of miraculous gifts and church polity.
We, as a church, agree that while there are many denominations, we will just be called Christians. Not the only Christians, but by name, Christians only.
Capitol City Christian Church of Lincoln, Nebraska began in April 1964. The original meeting place was the basement of a home. Shortly thereafter, the congregation met at the Huntington School located at 47th and Adams
Streets, and in July 1964, purchased an older church building at 2925 N. 48th St. The church met there until 1971.
While construction was taking place
at 7800 Holdrege Street, the church met in rented
facilities at 1800 N. 73rd. The first service at our present location was held November 7, 1971. Since then three building
additions have been constructed: an adult and children's education wing in 1980, a worship center and adult classrooms in
1992, and most recently completed in 2006, primary children's education classrooms for Sunday children's programs and our
child development center during the week, an Atrium for social connecting and ministry promotion, and an Event Center for
additional worship services and weekday activities.
Four senior ministers throughout our
history have served Capitol City: A. Dale Crain, 1964-1968; Bob Chitwood, 1968-1991; Larry O. Sullivan, 1991-1995; and Bill
Thornton, 1995-Present.
